So I’ve been seeing more and more shots of Sylvana Manto recently, so I did some digging around to see where else she appeared. In doing so I came across several early publications of Spick and Span featuring Madelaine Bannister, who on looking I am sure is the same person? Going under the name Sylvana she appeared in publications such as Fiesta, Kamera Special No.1 around 1957 and Kamera No.9 (1958)
If I were a betting man I’d say they were the same person and the Sylvana name was an alias made up by the likes of Harrison Marks or Russell Gay, but then most models didn’t use their real name at all so maybe both are? Can anyone add further proof Sylvana and Madeliane are one and the same?
Either way I’ve got some great original shots of her coming up!
All of her features, to include teeth, skin pigmentation features (moles, when not edited out), nipples, the tuft of hair inferior to her navel (also when not edited out) convince me beyond doubt (when viewing different photo sets) that they are the same model. I've looked and think that she has a scar below her navel in several shots, but others either edited out or taken before the scar?
The Kamera #nine, page 21, is highly edited in my opinion, as are the other four or so Kamera pics. Other photos in my possession reveal the scar and skin lesions, and in others she is wearing some covering for her abdominal area. 50's pics from Fiesta show her clothed and showing legs/cleavage. My guess is she had a hysterectomy or a c-section, with a vertical scar (not the usual for these
Totally agree with GHM editing his photo's as 21 has a superimposed background to it, which he did on the odd occasion. The one above, which I have others from seems to be a better representation of her and as you says later photo's have her posing to cover her abdominal area or wearing strategically place clothes. Still a stunning woman to look at either way 🙂
