Pamela Green

There is no denying the obvious visual talents of the beautiful Pamela Green, one of the most popular of all the Harrison Marks models, but she was also a very talented artist. Her actual modelling career started in 1948 through a booking mistake as a figure model for the life class at St. Martin’s School of Art in London where she was a student on a three year course Fashion Drawing. At the time she only posed for the Costume and Fashion classes for which she was paid the princely sum of 4/6 (23p!) an hour. She recalls – The day of my initiation into nude work happened by accident. I was called at short notice to fill in for a class where the model had failed to show up. The master was waiting impatiently. “Hurry up and get undressed, we’re late”. This was a life class. A quick look around the room showed me that the students were unknown to me as was the master. I thought “Well, there has got to be a first time”. I undressed behind the screen, and slipping on my coat walked to the rostrum. The master took my coat, helped me up and asked me to strike a pose. I stood facing the class, legs slightly apart with my weight on one hip. I have never felt quite so naked standing in front of about 20 students. After about 15 minutes I began to relax a little, everyone was concentrating on their drawing and by the end of the class it seemed the most natural thing to do. I collected my money from the office and discovered that I was paid more; five shillings instead of 4/6. I decided to begin modelling for the life classes and joined a small band of very young models who were all posing for the necessities in life, like their next meal. I was the eldest of the group at seventeen.*1

Pamela Green first met George Harrison Marks in the summer of 1953. George was a theatrical photographer and they met in connection with Pamela’s role in Bernard Delfont’s Folies Bergere which was running at the Prince of Wales Theatre at the time.  It was Pamela who persuaded George to try his hand at nude photography. Between them, they created the famous glamour model, Rita Landre, who no-one guessed was actually Pamela in disguise. It was clear that George and Pamela were an excellent professional team. G Harrison Marks Limited was formed, George’s photographic expertise perfectly complemented by Pamela’s skilled costume and set design – a skill informed by her studies as a fine artist, at St Martin’s School of Art.*2

Ann Austin

Ann Austin was one of the most popular and long-active models of the ‘generation’ that began their careers in the later 1950s (like Lorraine Burnett, Paula Page, Rosa Domaille, Jackie Parker). In an early edition of Russell Gay’s QT she is described as the ‘most exciting new discovery of the year’ – the year was probably 1957.  She had the distinction of being the very first model to be featured in Harrison Marks’s famous Solo series.  Anne was tall, certainly five feet ten inches – in shoes at least, really high ones more.  ‘Anne was a big girl, Junoesque, but all the same assembled with enormous skill, so that everything balanced perfectly. If you didn’t think you liked big girls, Anne could make you change your mind … To cap it all, Anne was strikingly beautiful, with wonderful colouring, dark hair with coppery natural tints, and green eyes. A knockout … ‘She was a well educated and intelligent girl, softly spoken, and without any extreme accent, although from her background [middle-class, Kensington] one might have expected that … Money was obviously no problem in her family and I can only assume that she was modelling because she liked doing it, not from need’.

Lorraine Burnett

Lorraine was exceptionally prolific and appeared in countless publications from the late 1950’s to mid-1960’s. In addition to her sumptuous proportions and baby-faced beauty, her slightly ‘buck-toothed’ look seemed only to add to her charm.

Lorraine was born in Manchester in 1937 and trained as a dancer before moving to London in 1955 to work as a nude statue at the Windmill Theatre.  Lorraine got lucrative contracts doing glamour shoots at camera and cine clubs in Soho

In a brief reminiscence of Lorraine published in Fiesta magazine in the mid 1980’s, Roger Davis recalled that she was especially popular in the US, but he shed no light on her origins. Davis also said she was ‘no clothes horse’ and when he first met her he thought she was nothing special, but once out of her clothes she was ‘a photographer’s paradise’ with an innate ability to pose. He continues: “Lorraine did a cabaret act, at various places in London. She could do the famous trick with the tassels on nipple caps, not only making the tassels rotate with the movement of her breasts, but making them rotate in opposite directions to each other. … Like Jackie Parker, appearing then in clubs, Lorraine must have been responsible for a large part of the raincoat sales in London.” Davis characterized Lorraine as “a very quiet girl, rather withdrawn in fact, an unexpected characteristic in a girl who could, and did, give an energetic and uninhibited performance on stage. … Hard to fathom, but a joy to ‘shoot’ “. One club at which Lorraine was a star act in the late 1950’s was the Panama Theatre Club, 42 Great Windmill Street, London W1.*1

As Well as working for Davis, Lorraine proved to be a favourite with both Russell Gay and Harrison Marks, whom she first worked with in 1958.  Pamela Green booked Lorraine after watching Lorraine with Harrison Marks in Soho and it was Lorraine’s 42” Bust and firm toned body which made her such a success.  Lorraine’s lingerie work was also a vital part of her work, appearing in spiked heels, suspenders, corsets and more, along with a variety of hair colours and wigs.

Lorraine seems to have retired back to the Midlands in the late 1960’s  where she continued to dance and strip, but little is known of her after that point.
